Abstract. The paper analyses an impact of converging technologies on social and economic spheres of our life, some positive and negative consequences. We investigate new roles and forms of some usual things such as computers, documents, professions in the modern world. It is demonstrated that a computer with its varieties (smart phones, tablets, lap tops etc.) are capturing some functions of traditional passports and, moreover, they play a window into the virtual world, which becomes more and more real, absorbing many properties and functions of the real world. We also consider one more possible future role of the technologies as an instrument for lengthening the life of the richest people. This fact, in its turn, might create a background for social unrest organized by those people for whom these technologies would be in accessible. We touch the problem of using the information technologies (especially, social networks) in order to manipulate people and creating so-called «clever crowds».
Keywords: converging technologies, luddism, neo-luddism, social unrest, revolution, clever crowds.
