Abstract. The article is devoted to the analytical review of one of the attempts to “eliminate” the subject undertaken by Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault in their studies of the author’s role in literary work. Author is observing concept of the author’s death, presented by Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault, who are leave for the authorship only the status of “writing’s effect” or “text’s function” to the author. According to them, the death of the author is the revival of the reader, which is the point of assembly, in which all signs and text elements come together, gain their completeness and meaning. The article presents critical arguments that can detect significant drawbacks of this concept; in particular, it raises the question of self-referential statements about the death of the author. However, it is shown that certain aspects of the hypothesis of the author’s death reflect some nuances of the real existence and the perception of the text. Thus, the article postulated “immortality” of the author as unremovable instance of the text, which doesn’t contradict the recognition of the importance of the reader’s role in the literary discourse.
Keywords : ontology, anthropology, the text, the author, the death of the author/subject, the reader.
