Abstract. An attempt was made to identify and describe the eight stages in the development of ideas about the principle of care of the self in the Western cultural tradition: 1) the stage of the Greek polis; 2) the stage of Roman Hellenism; 3) early Christianity; 4) the birth of the individual (12 th -14 th centuries); 5) the anthropological turn of early Modern times; 6) the rationalistic turn of middle Modern period (17 th -18 th centuries); 7) social stage of late Modernity (19 th – first half of the 20 th century); 8) a personalist focus of the postmodern era (second half of the 20 th – beginning of the 21 st century).
