Abstract. This paper examines the concept of “practices of the self” as basic to non-classical anthropology. Its non-classical character is determined by the change of philosophical “paradigm”: the traditional logos of essence (substance), which became the logos of representation (subject – object relationship) in Modern times, is now giving way to a “direct” phenomenology of the experience of oneself. Whereas classical anthropology, in any event, would talk about the essence of man, and, accordingly, about different forms and states of consciousness , non-classical anthropology studies different historical forms of the experience of oneself as the foundation of the correlative culture. As we care for ourselves (what concrete forms this historically and culturally fundamental event of self-realization and our world-realization can take), so is our society and culture.
Keywords: care of the self, experience of the self, art of conversion, metanoia, common sense.
