Abstract. In the first part of the paper we stressed the fact that “journey” serves as the most common spontaneous metaphor of successful life. In the second part of this paper we examined how a journey was represented in a hypothetical life story of a typical person. Two hundred fifty eight participants were instructed to imagine a life of a typical person and put on a time line the most important and memorable events with reference to their emotional intensity. It was found that one third of participants mentioned a journey among the most probable positive events. The journey was anticipated to be performed only once around the age 20, 30 or 60 years old. Younger participants noted a journey in typical life more often. The journey in Lifeline of a typical person predicted an increase in the number of positive events. In comparison, when performing the same task for the personal future, 40% of participants (N=206) expected themselves to travel soon. In the third part of the paper we focused on mediating of travelling experience by photography aimed to support autobiographical memory. We claimed that “the photo on the background” served as a tool for memory creation due to artificial conjunction of cultural landmark and image of a person. We supposed that selfie reduced a psychological distance between a traveller and cultural values of a landmark. Decreasing of existential pathos of journey weakens its exceptional role in one’s own life.
Key words: life course, journey as a metaphor of life, Life line, autobiographical memory, future-thinking, photography, selfie
